Activities at a Glance

Here is a quick overview of our activities and approximate dates to help with planning and to serve as a reminder of upcoming events.


February – March

Essay Contest

This is open to ALL students who have not graduated from High School. Participants are eligible to advance to regional and national levels to earn scholarships.

Oratoricle Contest

This is another opportunity for students to express their views and opinions on world topics while earning the chance to advance to regional and national levels. Scholarships are also rewarded to national winners.

April – May

Holdrege Optimist Scholarship

The Holdrege Optimist Club offers $600 scholarships to successful applicants. Our scholarships are limited to High School Seniors in Phelps County who will continue on to an institution of higher learning.


December – April


Starting in the last week of January, our wrestling club is open to area youth from Pre-K through 11th grade. Practices are Monday and Thursday nights at the Multi purpose room at HHS. Wrestlers have the chance to compete at several are tournaments running through April.


While we do not offer a structured basketball program, we do have jerseys and equipment for anyone needing equipment for area tournaments. Please contact us for more information.

April – May

Pitch Hit and Run

Optimist along with Aquafina offer this nationwide competition to all youth at NO COST. Participants are eligible to advance to state, regional, and national levels.

June – July


Open to all youth with a chance to advance to the national level.

August – September


Our football program is open to area youth in the 4th 5th and 6th grade. Practices begin the last week of August. Players have 4 weeks of games, all played on Sunday afternoons. This is FULL CONTACT FOOTBALL, all required equipment is provided by Holdrege Optimist Club and meets all health requirements.


We also offer volleyball to area athletes in 3rd – 6th grade. Third graders concentrate on fundamentals and the basics of volleyball, while the older players compete in games as well as clinics. Volleyball runs at the same time as our football program, and games and clinics are also held on Sunday afternoons.

Punt Pass and Kick

The NFL offers this competition through Optimist clubs. Open to ALL YOUTH at NO COST participants earn the opportunity to advance to higher levels.

Community Service

Year Long

Flag Program

Members of our club hang American flags for participating local businesses on all appropriate holidays.

Blood Mobile

Throughout the year, members of our club volunteer with the Red Cross to help setup and take down the Blood Mobile center in Holdrege.


Respect For Law

Each year our club selects an individual in the law enforcement profession to receive an award. These officials are honored for their exceptional work in law enforcement as well as community service.

June – July


Holdrege Optimist Club is a proud sponsor of a 11-12 yr old baseball team. Along with a team sponsorship, we have donated time and funds toward the upkeep on renovation of the Optimist Field.

November – December

Toys For Tots

For over 30 years, Holdrege Optimists have worked with SEVERAL area businesses and organizations to provide gifts to area youth for Christmas.

Applications are distibuted to local churches and are also available at the Health and Human Services office shortly after Thanksgiving.

Youth Appreciation Day

This is our way of saying “Thanks” to the area youth. Our club sponsors a Saturday Matinee at the Sun Theater in Holdrege. Open to all youth, admission is free along with gift certificates to the concession stand.
